What Security Officers Do (and Don't Do): How Signal of Lincoln Defines the Role

Last Updated: October 21, 2026

The short answer: A Signal of Lincoln security officer's job is to observe, report and follow each site's escalation procedures. Officers watch for anything out of the ordinary, make sure the right people on the client's side hear about it first, document what they saw clearly with photos, and keep their supervisor informed. They are not police officers, and they are not medical providers.

When people hire security, they sometimes picture something closer to a police officer or a first responder. Being clear about what officers actually do is one of the most useful things a security company can offer, because it sets expectations, keeps everyone safe, and makes it obvious who handles what when something happens.

What Our Officers Do

Observe

Officers pay attention. On a patrol route or at a dedicated post, they watch for doors that are unlocked or propped open, people in areas they shouldn't be, vehicles that don't belong, lights that are out, and water where it shouldn't be. A lot of good security work is simply noticing things early.

Follow Your Escalation Procedures

Every site has its own people to call first. At one property, that might be maintenance. At another, it's a facility manager or an after-hours line. Our post orders spell that out for each site, so the right people on your side hear about a problem right away. A Signal supervisor is always notified too.

Report Clearly

Officers document what they see in clear reports written in plain language, with photos that show the client exactly what the officer saw. Routine observations go in the daily report. Anything that needs attention, like an unlocked door after hours, gets its own escalation report so it doesn't get buried.

Keep the Team Informed

When something happens on shift that the next officer should know about, like a door that won't latch or a water issue, officers share it with their teammates at that site so nothing falls through the cracks between shifts.

Provide a Visible, Calm Presence

A uniformed officer or a moving, marked patrol vehicle is a deterrent on its own. Officers are also friendly, professional faces for residents, employees and visitors.

What Our Officers Don't Do

They Aren't Medical Providers

Medical care isn't part of what we're hired to do. In a medical situation, officers follow the site's procedures, call 911 when needed, and help guide responders. Officers who hold a current CPR and AED certification may use it, but we don't promise medical care.

They Aren't Police

Officers observe and report. When a situation calls for law enforcement, they call law enforcement and share what they saw.

They Don't Work Outside the Post Orders

Officers stick to what's written for each site. If something comes up that the post orders don't cover, they call their supervisor rather than guessing.

Why Being Clear About Scope Matters

  • It keeps people safe. Officers who know their role don't take risks they aren't trained for.
  • It gets the right help faster. When everyone knows who to call, problems get to the right person sooner.
  • It builds trust. Clients know exactly what they're getting, with no surprises.

Be cautious of any security company that promises its officers will handle everything. Usually that means nobody has defined what they'll actually do.

How Officers Learn the Role

Every Signal of Lincoln officer completes three layers of training: Officer Pathway training, Signal of Lincoln onboarding, and on-the-job training at their site. Every training starts with the same message: follow the post order escalations and protocols, so the right client-side people are taken care of, not just call a supervisor. After 90 days, officers move into a deeper development pathway with their supervisor.
